Pillow Talk

There's a lot of cute pillows out there right now.
I've been intrigued with a few of the 'envelope' slip covers that I've seen on Pinterest.  One pinner claimed one to be really, really, really easy so I thought I'd give it a try.

Sallie at Texas Cottage did a great job with her tutorial and it really was super easy.

I had two pillows I wanted to try...
a Harry Potter pillow for Josh's teacher
and a 9 patch flower pillow (that's what I'll call it) just for fun
...again, both inspired by Pinterest.

Let's start with Harry.
First, let me ask you a question...is it unethical to try and copy cat something from an Etsy shop?
That's what I did here and I hope it's okay.
To make me feel better, go click over to her site and look around for a second OK?
She did an excellent job on these pillows...

I'm always up for simplification so I decided to use a hot glue gun and felt on top of a pillowcase whereas it looks like the originals are cotton pieces actually sewn together to create the pillowcase...does that make sense?

Anyway, this is what I came up with...

Not quite as cute as the original, but that's what you get when you oversimplify.

We gave it to Josh's teacher as an end of the year/birthday present (her birthday was Memorial Day).
She said she loved it...I hope she wasn't just trying to be nice :)

There, you can see Harry's scar better in this picture.

My second pillow was inspired by Tanya from Trey and Lucy.
She too offers a great tutorial on how she does her flowers.
I kind of combined her technique and mine and this was my finished product.

I realize now that my flowers should have been much bigger so as to be almost touching.
Oh well, I'll know for next time.
I loved making these flowers though...they were so much fun.
Once again, I used a glue gun instead of a needle and thread.  I tried to sew them together, I really did, but it just took way too much time so I went back to my old method of the glue gun.
I also did something that I've never done on my flowers before.
I squashed them.
With the iron.
It was hard for me to do at first, but I think I like the effect.

I think if I ever do pillows again I will look for a not so puffy version.  I got these two at JoAnn Fabrics.
They were more expensive than I expected but luckily I had some coupons.
They were just a bit too full for me.
I'll have to shop around and find a flatter alternative.

Pillows...not too hard.  I'm think I'll keep this slip cover tutorial handy.

  1. Very cute pillows, Aimee. When do you do all this?

  2. Aimee - I usually buy cheap bed pillows at the big W and then cut them down to whatever size I would like, bit more work, but easy on the pocket book. Looks like fun at your house.
